Microsoft Zune Review – The Future of MP3 and Digital Media Players?

Microsoft Zune Review – The Future of MP3 and Digital Media Players?

    Article by MGM Zone

Earlier this year, the idea of a Microsoft-branded MP3 player was foreign to most consumers. After all, what could the software giant do to the iPod dynasty that Windows Media hardware partners such as Creative, iRiver, and Samsung had been unable to do? Well, we all knew that after Microsoft’s September 14 announcement, the Zune would be a different kind of portable media player, one that integrates wireless technology for Zune-to-Zune sharing of files, and one that works within an iTunes-like closed Zune Marketplace ecosystem. The hard drive device, which comes in black, white, or the love-it/hate-it brown, has entered the real world and will please most users, especially beginners, thanks to an excellent UI, nice integration with Zune Marketplace software, and good playback performance.

By now, we all know the basics of the Zune: it’s a 30GB MP3 player with a photo- and video-friendly 3-inch (4:3) screen, and it costs 9.99 (unless you buy it at buyazune.com). It runs on a customized version of Portable Media Center software (Windows CE-based) and features the same intuitive twist-navigation like players such as the Toshiba Gigabeat S.

While the player is similar to many other players in terms of its feature set–music, video, and photo playback, plus an FM tuner–what sets it apart is its integrated Wi-Fi chip, which allows it to seek out and be seen by other Zune-sters. This sharing feature allows users to share music and photos (but not video) within the same room. Shared photo files, on the other hand, have no limitations. We’d love to see Wi-Fi expanded so that one could sync or purchase music wirelessly (or even see Zunes across the globe), but having played with the device, I see why Microsoft is starting small. So far, the Zune experience out of the box and beyond has been predictable and solid. Wi-Fi or not, it’s one excellent media player.

Quickly, about the box and its contents: the Zune packaging is minimal but has flare. You actually lift the Zune out of the box by pulling on its brown ribbon (nice touch), and the bundled earphones and rubbery USB cable are nowhere to be seen until you realize the flaps adjacent to the Zune lift open. In addition, you’ll get a suede case, a software CD, some guides, and a sticker in the package. While we’d love to see more–such as an AC adaptor– the introductory Zune experience is well done.

The colors are subdued and the shell has a translucent matte finish, and more importantly, the body does not attract fingerprints (though the screen does). The double-shot effect of the secondary color (green on the brown version, bluish on the black, translucent on the white) definitely gives the player visual pizzazz. The built-in battery will last up to 14 hours for audio. Interestingly, the back says this in fine print: “Hello from Seattle.” The Zune, which is manufactured by Toshiba but completely designed by Microsoft, is an original-looking player with a style of its own.

It’s a durable device that will withstand scratches, bumps, and bruises, though the primary seam of the device looks as if it might burst open after a hard fall. The body is minimal with no buttons on the sides, only a hold switch and an earphone jack on top and a proprietary USB/accessories port on the bottom. The screen and main controller are surrounded by a thin, metallic inlay, while the three control buttons are dead simple (the small dedicated back and play/pause buttons are flush with the body).

Overall, the Zune is a well-designed portable media device with good playback performance, a snappy processor, and an excellent interface. Wi-Fi sharing worked well, but prospective owners should know its format support, especially for videos, is limited. The Zune looks like a good fit for MP3 player novices, though we hope Microsoft addresses issues and will make the Zune usable as a hard drive; extend video support to include DRM (which they probably will do when its own video store opens); and open up a true Wi-Fi network. The foundation looks good, though, and those not interested in version 1 of Zune can look forward to improved versions 2, 3, and beyond.

This review was brought to you by CNET.

If your interested in the Microsoft Zune, I would recommend http://www.buyazune.com as they consistently offer the best prices for every model and accessory of the Zune.

      Booking from the Cloud

      Booking from the Cloud

      Article by Michael Hill

Given the immense usefulness of the new technologies, it is quite surprising that most small business owners and entrepreneurs don’t rely on cloud computing as often for backups, sharing information, cooperative editing, wagering operations, betting lines, games stats, and every other part of the sports betting business where the cloud can lend its helping hand.

An online backup survey conducted by Carbonite attests to the reduced use of the cloud by small businesses. Roughly only 10% of the 4,084 surveyed said they use online services to back up their data. The majority still relies on physical media forms of data storage. The survey was conducted last December and came from 125 small businesses with 20 or fewer employees. The survey found that small-business owners use back-up tools including external hard drives (42%), USB and flash memory sticks (38%) and CDs and DVDs (25%) to store computer files.

Although the surveyed are not specifically sports businesses, like most bookmaking enterprises, they are run by less than 20 individuals and handle important information.

Pay per head services use the cloud to power your bookmaking business. It gives your players the chance to bet online or over the phone thanks to state-of-the-art booking software and high quality web page design. It also allows booking agents to keep control of all player betting activities through detailed reports available at any time and constantly updated.

Pay per Head Solutions provides a comprehensive package with all the tools you need to run a successful sports betting business, including horse betting, a full-fledged online casino, a call center and a custom website.

The unique software developed in-house by our programmers will be available for your business as part of our comprehensive solution. It will be integrated into your website so that your clients will be able to bet from the comfort of their homes or anywhere, at any time. Read this First When Looking to Buy a Netbook

Read this First When Looking to Buy a Netbook

        Article by Gostop

Many people looking for advice regarding netbook purchases. That is great but many experienced members here end up answering the same questions over and over again without input from new members. The best thing you can do is go through and answer these questions before asking us which netbook to buy:1.Screen Size – which screen size were you looking for? There are essentially three sizes out there: 10″, 11.6″, and 12″. Keep in mind that larger screens tend to have a higher resolution and be a little more comfortable for longer viewing. 10″ netbooks tend to be a little smaller and lighter in overall size but their lower screen resolutions can be a pain for web browsing, media playback, and office productivity. 2.Battery Life – One of the most important aspects regarding a netbook is how long it can last on a single charge. How much do you need for you usage? Remember to keep in mind that manufacturers’ estimates are about 1-2 more than what you will likely get in real world situations. 3.Processor – Do you have a preference for something Intel or AMD? The Intel Atom series is widely used in netbooks as it tends to provide the best power efficiency. AMD processors often provide better performance over the Atom line but they aren’t as power efficient. In other words, an Atom powered netbook will last longer on a single charge but an AMD powered netbook with generally perform tasks faster. 4.Video – Is this just going to be used to playback standard definition videos or do you want to playback HD content as well? What about YouTube? Most netbooks are fine with 360p YouTube videos but need hardware acceleration for 480p and higher. 5.Other Multimedia – Do you want to run iTunes, Windows Media Player, or something else to playback music? What about photo or video editing? Will you be encoding a large amount of music on this or will it strictly be used for video/audio playback and photo viewing? Most netbooks are fine running typical media playback programs such as iTunes along with photo viewing. Advanced photo editing, such as using Photoshop, really shouldn’t be done on a netbook. Pre-installed Operating System – Do you want to stick to the ways of old with Windows XP or do you want a Windows 7 flavor? Maybe you want to break away from that and go with a Linux distro. Just be aware that Windows 7 Starter has its limitations, Windows XP is being phased out, and Linux cannot run most program releases. 6.RAM – How much RAM do you want pre-installed in the netbook? Windows 7 Starter equipped netbooks tend to come pre-installed with 1GB of RAM and can be upgraded to 2GB of RAM. Netbooks coming with Windows 7 Home Premium likely have 2GB of pre-installed RAM and can be upgraded to 4GB. This all depends on the processor and manufacturer though. Hard Drive Size – Is 160GB enough or do you want 250GB or more? Gauging hard drive size can be tricky. Installed programs can take up a good chunk but most hard drive space is consumed with audio and video files. Most netbooks come with either 160GB or 250GB hard drive. There are some models that you can customize to have lager internal hard drives, such as from Dell.com or hp.com, but they come at a cost. 7.Wireless Connectivity – Are you fine with the standard 802.11g wi-fi or do you want to go all out and get a model with 802.11n and bluetooth? Most wireless routers, both public and private, operate under 802.11g. However, some people may want 802.11n if they have that type of wireless router. The main benefit of 802.11n is not seen in a faster internet connection but rather faster speeds when streaming media over a wireless network. Expansion Options – Do you want to hook the netbook up to a USB DVD burner, USB hard drive, or something else? Do you want it to have a built-in multi-card reader so you can copy photos off of a memory card that is in your digital camera? What about eSATA? eSATA is a standard used for hooking up external hard drives to computers. It has the benefit of being over 6 times faster than USB 2.0 (the USB standard for most netbooks). However, eSATA is still something that hasn’t fully caught on. 8.Brand Preferences – Many people prefer one brand over another. This normally comes from years of experience with particular brands. Buying Preferences – Do you want to strictly stick to in-store purchases or would you mind buying online? Keep in mind that your credit card company may offer an extended warranty past that of the manufacturer’s. Call them and ask. Try Them Out – One of the best things you can do is go down to your local electronics store and try their models out. It doesn’t matter if you are going to buy from them or not, you will still get to experience the hardware. Personal experiences are much more valuable than user opinions. Price – How much do you want to spend on this? Does that price include any extra accessories or add-ons (RAM, upgrading to something better than Windows 7 Starter, carrying case, warranty) or is it just for the netbook?

          LG BD670 – A Brief Review Of The 3D Blu-ray Player

          LG BD670 – A Brief Review Of The 3D Blu-ray Player

          Article by Curtis Hoskins

The LG BD670 Blu-ray DVD Player is currently priced around 0.00, which is a nice price considering the great performance and features it provides. It has built-in Wi-Fi, DLNA capability, support for Full HD 3D Blu-ray playback and much more. It has LG’s Smart TV, which delivers easy access to a great set of Online Streaming Media Services. For the average consumer on a fixed budget, the LG BD670 is good pick for all your Home Entertainment needs.

LG’s no frills approach to its Blu-ray Player, actually make them stand out from the crowd. Not relying on gimmicks to draw you in, it prefers to offer you excellent performance and easy to use features. The design of the BD670 is based on this concept. The player is slim with a glossy black finish. A standard disc loading tray is located on the left side, with basic controls to the right. It comes with a remote control that is well lay-out. One noticeable flaw on the remote is a missing button that allows for direct launching of Online Streaming Media Services. However, LG does make up for this in its user interface, by making access to its streaming services, very quick and easy. And as with many of 2011 players, the BD670 Blu-ray DVD Player can also be controlled through your smart-phone via a free app download.

VIDEO QUALITY:The LG BD670 give us excellent video quality when playing 3D Blu-rays or standard Blu-rays. Full HD 1080p (24 & 60Hz) is available when connected via the HDMI Output. Other connections include Composite Output and Component Output. Component Video Output resolution is limited to 480i because of restrictions from the AACS. DVD playback is excellent as well on the BD670. The player can up-scaled your old DVDs to near HD 1080p quality.

AUDIO QUALITY:The BD670 has built-in audio decoding for Linear PCM, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It can also transmit Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio audio formats in their native bit-stream to be decoded by an A/V receiver. The audio connections include HDMI, Digital Audio – Optical and Analog Audio 2.0-channel. There are no multi-channel analog outputs, so if you want your A/V receiver to decode the audio, it must have a HDMI input.

The LG BD670 has some great extra features including built-in WI-FI – 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz band only), DLNA support (stream videos from your PC to your HDTV), USB playback (MKV, DivX, XviD, MP3, and JPEG) and online streaming services. Smart TV is LG’s new feature on the BD670 where you can access online content. It provides you with Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, Amazon Instant Streaming, MLB.TV, MOG, vTuner, Napster and much more. Samsung and Sony may have more selections (BD670 does not have Hulu Plus), but the BD670 should satisfy most consumers online demands. Many experts, including CNET.com, state LG’s streaming media services is the best they have seen so far in 2011. CNET goes on to say the LG BD670 is “one of the best valued blu-ray players out there today.”

THE PROS: The BD670 Blu-ray DVD Player from LG delivers excellent, realistic images on 3D and standard Blu-ray discs at 1080p/24 video resolution. As well as supporting HD audio formats giving you an ultimate viewing experience. It up-scales standard DVDs, has built-in Wi-Fi, SmartTV (has added Hulu Plus, Amazon VOD, NHL GameCenter, NBA Game Live and MLB.TV to it list of services), BD-Live, DLNA support USB playback and much more. This new Wi-Fi Direct certified player can connect to other Wi-Fi components directly without the use of a hot-spot.

THE CONS: Unfortunately the LG BD670 does not have any built-in storage space to download BD-Live content. If having on-board storage space is important for you, check out LG BD690, it is basically the same player as the BD670, but has a 250 GB Hard Drive. A USB device with at least 1 GB of memory will need to be used with the player to download such content. There are no 7.1-ch analog outputs. Disc loading speeds are a little slower than the average speed of the 2011 players.

THE FINAL WORD: The BD670 maybe LG
